1. Introduction – Honoring a Brave Son of the Soil
On this day, 18th July, we commemorate the birth of one of Pakistan’s greatest heroes—Squadron Leader Sarfraz Ahmed Rafiqui Shaheed. A symbol of valor, patriotism, and selflessness, Rafiqui laid down his life defending the skies of Pakistan during the 1965 Indo-Pak War. His extraordinary courage earned him a revered place in history, and the hearts of the nation.
2. Early Life and Passion for Flying
Born on 18 July 1935 in Rajshahi (then part of British India), Sarfraz Rafiqui showed signs of leadership and discipline from a young age. After completing his early education, he joined the Pakistan Air Force Academy in Risalpur and quickly stood out due to his skills, intelligence, and passion for aviation. His peers and instructors recognized him as a born leader—focused, daring, and humble.
3. Rising Through the Ranks
Rafiqui was commissioned into the Pakistan Air Force in 1953. Over the years, he demonstrated exceptional flying skills, discipline, and devotion to duty. As a fighter pilot, he gained mastery over aircraft like the F-86 Sabre and became known for his precision and coolness under pressure. His dedication earned him respect not only from his comrades but also from his superiors.
4. The Heroic Act – 6th September 1965
During the Indo-Pak War of 1965, Rafiqui led several successful aerial missions. On 6th September, in the skies over Chamb-Jaurian sector, he led a formation of three F-86 Sabres against a formation of IAF Hunters, successfully destroying two enemy aircraft. During the dogfight, his guns jammed, but instead of retreating, he selflessly handed over the lead to his wingman and continued to fly as a decoy, drawing enemy fire to protect his comrades.
His aircraft was eventually hit and he embraced martyrdom in the line of duty, displaying extraordinary bravery, self-sacrifice, and leadership.
5. National Recognition and Everlasting Legacy
For his gallantry and supreme sacrifice, Squadron Leader Sarfraz Rafiqui was posthumously awarded the Hilal-e-Jurat, Pakistan’s second-highest military award. His heroism became a symbol of the indomitable spirit of the Pakistan Air Force.
To honor his memory, several institutions, roads, and airbases have been named after him. His story is taught to young cadets as a shining example of what it means to serve with honor.
6. Inspiration for Generations
Even decades after his martyrdom, Sarfraz Rafiqui’s name continues to inspire. His leadership under pressure, his loyalty to mission and team, and his ultimate sacrifice for Pakistan make him a timeless role model for the youth. He teaches us that true greatness lies in service to others and putting the nation before self.
